Papua – The armed criminal group (KKB) in Papua has once again emerged into the public spotlight after it was revealed that they were exploiting minors, a practice that is clearly prohibited by law. KKB even openly showed off this exploitation via social media on Saturday, March 30 2024, this then sparked widespread criticism from various parties.
In the video posted by KKB on social media, children who appear to be under 18 years old are seen sitting and holding long-barreled firearms while singing accompanied by an adult man who is thought to be a KKB member.
Yonas Alfons Nusy, a Papuan community leader condemned this action. He believes that the exhibition really raises serious concerns about the condition of human rights in the Papua region, especially regarding the exploitation of children in armed conflict.
“We strongly condemn the KKB’s actions in directing underage children to get involved in war. This is a serious violation of children’s rights and must be followed up firmly in accordance with applicable law,” he said.
Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch also condemned the KKB’s actions. They called on the government and related parties to act immediately and protect children from this kind of exploitation.
“The central and regional governments have also confirmed their commitment to eradicate KKB and protect the rights of citizens, including children,” he continued.
