Jayapura – Jayapura Mayor Abisai Rollo emphasized the importance of placing indigenous communities at the center of development efforts in Papua. He made the statement in response to the Third Papua Strategic Analysis (APS III) Conference, which he described as an important forum for discussing Papua’s future development while safeguarding local communities and the environment.

According to Rollo, Papua is currently facing a number of challenges that require collective attention, particularly in preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of indigenous livelihoods. He stressed that Papua’s forests are a vital asset that must be protected from environmental degradation and excessive exploitation, as they play a crucial role in supporting future generations.

He expressed appreciation for the APS III Conference, which brought together various stakeholders to share strategic ideas and perspectives on key issues affecting Papua. Rollo noted that the conference has the potential to generate valuable recommendations and policies that can positively impact communities across the region, including residents of Jayapura City.

The mayor also highlighted the need for development policies to incorporate indigenous values, cultural heritage, and local wisdom. He stated that the presence of traditional villages in Jayapura should be recognized as an essential component of any strategic initiative implemented in Papua, ensuring that development remains aligned with the cultural identity of local communities.

Furthermore, Rollo underscored that Papua’s progress should not be measured solely by infrastructure growth and modernization, but also by its ability to preserve cultural identity and improve the well-being of indigenous people. He stressed that development must provide greater opportunities for indigenous communities to become active participants and key drivers of progress.

“We want Papua to advance without losing its identity. Indigenous communities must become the main actors of development, while Papua’s young generation should be empowered to become competitive, creative, and innovative leaders of the future,” he said.

Rollo expressed hope that the outcomes of the APS III Conference would provide constructive input for policymakers and stakeholders in building a Papua that is inclusive, sustainable, and respectful of indigenous rights and environmental conservation.
