Jayapura – Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia (Komnas HAM) Papua Representative Office has recorded at least four prominent violent incidents that occurred across Papua between January and March 2026. These incidents have drawn serious attention due to their direct impact on civilian safety.
Head of Komnas HAM Papua Representative, Frits Ramandey, stated that the incidents took place in several regions and involved various forms of violence, all resulting in casualties and suffering among local communities.
According to Komnas HAM’s findings, a total of 14 people were killed, 13 civilians experienced acts of violence, and dozens of others were forced to flee their homes due to security concerns.
The four major incidents highlighted are:
- The killing of two pilots at Korowai Batu Airport in Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua, in February 2026.
- An attack on a military post in Sori Village, Maybrat Regency, West Papua, in March 2026.
- The murder of a healthcare worker in Bamusbama District, Tambrauw Regency, in March 2026.
- A violent incident causing fatalities in Dogiyai Regency, Central Papua, in late March 2026.
Komnas HAM assessed that the rising trend of violence indicates that the security situation in Papua remains challenging. This condition poses a significant risk of human rights violations, particularly affecting civilians in conflict-prone areas.
As a response, Komnas HAM Papua has called for a comprehensive conflict resolution approach through dialogue involving the government, security forces, and civil society. This effort is expected to reduce violence and establish long-term stability in Papua.
Komnas HAM also emphasized the importance of the state’s presence in ensuring maximum protection for civilians and upholding law enforcement in a fair, transparent, and human rights-oriented manner.
