Teluk Wondama (DBK) — A solemn and heartfelt atmosphere marked the 100th Anniversary of the Foundation of Education Civilization in Papua, held in Miei, Teluk Wondama Regency, on Friday (October 25). The historic site stood as a witness to the beginning of modern education in Papua, when Missionary Isaak Samuel Kijne planted the seeds of learning on October 25, 1925.
Although the Minister of Religious Affairs was unable to attend in person, his official message was delivered by Suwarsono, the Director of Christian Education, Directorate General of Christian Community Guidance. In his remarks, the Minister expressed deep appreciation to religious leaders, traditional figures, church leaders, youth, women, the local government, and all communities who took part in commemorating this historical milestone.
“Your presence today reflects the true spirit of building Papua — a spirit of togetherness, brotherhood, and humanity within the unity of the Republic of Indonesia,” the Minister stated.
The Minister emphasized that the centennial commemoration is not merely a ceremonial event, but a moral reflection to continue the legacy of Papua’s educational pioneers. Education, he said, serves as a bridge of progress, broadening horizons and shaping a generation of Papuans who are both faithful and knowledgeable.
“From Miei, Teluk Wondama — the blessed land — faith and the spirit of learning have grown hand in hand. From this humble place, God has shone His light upon Papua, nurturing generations after generations,” he continued.
The Minister further underlined that the legacy of education in Papua goes beyond intellectual development; it is also about affirming human dignity, nurturing love, and promoting respect for others regardless of background.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening education in Papua through values rooted in faith, humanity, and nationalism. These efforts are part of a sustainable strategy to develop Papuan human resources who are competent, faithful, and competitive, while remaining grounded in local wisdom and cultural identity.
“Education must serve as a bridge of hope. In every classroom, Papuan children should find love and brotherhood so that peace and progress may flourish across the land,” the Minister added.
Concluding his remarks, the Minister invited all segments of society to make this centennial celebration a new chapter in Papua’s educational history — a chapter filled with love, hard work, and shared hope for a brighter future.
“May God Almighty bless the Land of Papua, strengthen its young generation, and guide our steps in building a civilization of faith, justice, and unity within Indonesia,” he concluded.
