Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Condemns Brutal Killing of 11 Miners in Yahukimo, Papua

Jakarta — The Indonesian government has taken a firm stance in response to the recent humanitarian tragedy in Yahukimo, Papua. The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Gunawan, strongly condemned the armed violence that claimed the lives of 11 miners between April 5 and 8, 2025.
“This tragedy clearly shows that the perpetrators have no sense of humanity, carrying out brutal and sporadic killings,” said Minister Budi Gunawan in an official statement, Friday, April 11, 2025. He added that the act of terror has instilled fear and disrupted community activities in the region.
According to Budi, the government is now focusing on evacuating the victims and returning the bodies to their respective families. However, the process faces major challenges due to difficult geographical conditions and adverse weather, which are limiting access to the crime scene.
Since the incident occurred, Budi stated that he has instructed all relevant ministries and institutions under his coordination to act immediately. “We are pushing for swift actions, both in the evacuation process and in enhancing security measures,” he said.
Yesterday, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs held a coordination meeting involving various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), and the Crisis Operations Center (PCO). The meeting aimed to formulate integrated steps to address the recurring violence in Papua.
The government affirmed its commitment to strengthen security in conflict-prone areas in Papua so that communities can return to normal life. Budi also called for support from all elements of Papuan society to not provide any space for perpetrators of violence.
“The government remains committed to improving the welfare of the Papuan people and ensuring that there is no place for terrorism and violence. Legal action against the perpetrators will be carried out without compromise,” he asserted.
In light of the killings, Budi Gunawan expressed deep condolences over the humanitarian tragedy. “May the victims rest in peace in the presence of God Almighty, and may the families left behind be given strength and resilience,” he said.
