Ali Kabiay: The UN Has Reaffirmed That Papua Is an Integral Part of Indonesia

Jayapura – Ali Kabiay, Chairman of the Papua Mandala Trikora Youth and Secretary General of the Red and White Front RI-Papua, has emphasized that the United Nations (UN) has repeatedly confirmed Papua’s status as an integral part of Indonesia. He stated that the UN has rejected multiple proposals and resolutions supporting Papua’s independence, as they contradict the organization’s core principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Papua is officially part of Indonesia based on the 1969 Act of Free Choice (Pepera), which was recognized by the UN through Resolution No. 2504,” said Ali Kabiay, a native Papuan from the Saireri tribe.
Ali further explained that the UN has consistently rejected efforts to push the issue of Papua’s independence on the international stage. Several key decisions reaffirming Papua’s status as part of Indonesia include:
- UN Resolution No. 2504 (1969) – Recognized the results of the Act of Free Choice and reaffirmed Papua as an official part of Indonesia.
- UN decision in 1971 – Rejected Papua Barat’s bid to become a UN member state as an independent nation.
- UN Resolution No. 61/295 (2006) – Reaffirmed that Papua remains part of Indonesia and dismissed any claims for independence.
According to Ali, history has clearly documented that Papua’s integration into Indonesia was the result of a legitimate process through the Pepera. “The 1969 referendum was a direct expression of the Papuan people’s will, and there is no valid reason to dispute its legitimacy today,” he stressed.
Ali Kabiay also urged all Papuans to maintain unity and support regional development within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
