Timika – Entering its 5th month now, Susi Air pilot Philips Mark Merthens is still being held hostage by the Armed Criminal Group led by Egianus Kogoya. It’s just not known where the pilot captain was.
Papua Police Chief, Inspector General of Police Mathius D Fahiri gave the latest news. He stated that the pilot was still healthy and safe. The pilot who was taken hostage is still in the Nduga Regency area.
“Yes, they are still there (in Nduga), safe and sound,” he said.
Kapolda Mathius D Fahiri also stated that until now he and the local government are still building an approach with the Egianus Kogoya family.
This approach was meant to keep the family in touch with Egianus Kogoya. That way, the negotiation process can continue despite being hampered by many factors.
The regional police chief also stated that even though the pilot was still being held hostage, the government continued to try to establish communication with the parties.
However, he continued, his party would not comply with Egianus Kogoya’s request, which demanded independence for the pilot who was a New Zealand citizen.
“So the point is there is no other solution other than the pilot must be handed over,” said the Regional Police Chief.
He also emphasized that “This is state sovereignty, so Egianus could not make another offer. There was no offer of independence or asking for weapons and ammunition. The TNI-Polri officials did not talk about this issue,” he said.
