Timika, Central Papua — Law enforcement authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to take firm action against anyone suspected of spreading hate speech, especially those seeking to divide the unity of communities in Papua. The government emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated, underscoring its seriousness in maintaining peace and social harmony across the region.
This decisive stance comes amid the growing circulation of provocative content on social media that has the potential to trigger conflict among residents. Police officials stressed that all investigations and legal actions will be carried out professionally and in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
In addition to strict law enforcement, authorities are urging the public to actively help preserve peace by refraining from sharing or promoting provocative information. Citizens are encouraged to report any form of hate speech directly to law enforcement officers so it can be handled according to legal procedures.
The public is also reminded not to take matters into their own hands, as such actions could disrupt public order and security in Papua. Authorities call on residents to trust the ongoing legal process so that every issue can be resolved properly without creating new tensions within the community.
A respected community and religious leader from Central Papua, Reverend Giman Magay, also called on residents to remain calm and united in facing any divisive issues.
“Hate speech is like a small spark in dry grass. If not extinguished with love and law, it can burn down our harmony. I urge all people in Central Papua to stay calm, respect one another, and trust the authorities to uphold justice,” said Rev. Giman Magay.
Regional and religious leaders likewise emphasized the importance of mutual respect and maintaining harmony amid Papua’s cultural diversity. They noted that Papua has long been recognized as one of the most tolerant regions in Indonesia.
“Papua is home to people of all tribes and faiths. Let us preserve our harmony and not allow provocation to divide us,” said a traditional leader in Jayapura.
Residents are also encouraged to use social media responsibly and avoid spreading unverified information. Authorities urged citizens to promptly report any online content or activity that promotes hate or hostility so it can be swiftly addressed.
With the joint commitment of law enforcement, government, and the community, Papua is expected to remain a land of peace, tolerance, and a shining example of unity for the rest of Indonesia.
