Papua Joins National Wave of Protests, Demonstrators Gather at Provincial DPRD Office

Jayapura – The wave of demonstrations held simultaneously across various regions on Monday (September 1, 2025) also resonated in Papua. Protesters in Jayapura gathered in front of the Papua Provincial DPRD (Regional People’s Representative Council) building, carrying a series of demands that aligned with the national movement.

demonstrations were organized in 27 regions across Indonesia. Although the official list of demands has yet to be fully released, the issues raised are believed to include rejection of the proposed increase in DPR (Parliament) allowances, calls for the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of both the DPR and the police, and demands for greater government transparency. Protesters also voiced calls for police reform and the release of previously arrested demonstrators.

In Papua, this latest demonstration carried a different nuance compared to earlier waves. On August 11–12, 2025, the province had witnessed a separate protest demanding the replacement of Acting Governor Agus Fatoni, who was accused of lacking neutrality during the Repeat Voting (PSU) process. After several weeks of pause, the masses returned to the streets, this time rallying behind broader national issues rather than solely local concerns.

Participants in the protest emphasized that the Papua Provincial DPRD building is the “people’s house” and must remain open to public voices. They expressed hope that the demands conveyed would be taken seriously by both local representatives and the central government.
