Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago emphasized that the presence of the TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) and Polri (Indonesian National Police) in Papua aims to provide protection to the community.
According to him, the security measures implemented by the authorities are focused on creating a sense of safety and preventing further civilian casualties. He stated this in response to the ongoing issues in Papua that have recently resulted in loss of life.
“What the Polri and TNI are doing in Papua is providing protection to our community there,” said Djamari at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs in Jakarta, Wednesday (August 5, 2026).

Djamari stated that the government continues to monitor the security situation in Papua, including following the incident that occurred in Yahukimo Regency.
According to him, the TNI Commander has taken steps to prevent further casualties in the wake of the event.
“Regarding the incidents that occurred recently, such as in Yahukimo, the TNI Commander has already taken appropriate measures to ensure there are no further casualties,” he said.

He emphasized that the government is not changing its approach to handling security in Papua. However, the TNI and Polri continue to enhance security measures so that the community can carry out their activities safely.
“There is no change in the overall approach, but rather an enhancement of the existing methods; this is being done by the TNI Commander and the National Police Chief to ensure peace and order in the community. These efforts will continue,” stated Djamari.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the government does not want any civilian casualties during efforts to maintain security in Papua.

According to him, the government is paying serious attention to Papua, including through coordination between the TNI and Polri to maintain the security situation in the region.
“We are fully committed to this. We do not want any civilian casualties. It is not just the general public in Papua; indigenous Papuans themselves have also fallen victim,” he asserted.
