Tolikara, Pegunungan Papua – The Police Task Force that is a member of the Operation Peace Cartenz together with the Tolikara Police and the Illu Police moved quickly to evacuate the victims as well as a thorough investigation regarding the shooting incident against road project workers around the Kali Kabur area, Kanggime District, Tolikara Regency, Papua Pegunungan, Sunday (2/8/2026).
Head of Public Relations Operation Peace Cartenz-2026, Chief Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., when interviewed, Monday (8/3) said that based on temporary data, the incident resulted in five deaths and five other people were successfully evacuated safely.
“Based on temporary data, five people were declared dead due to gunshot wounds and severe abuse wounds, and five other people were successfully evacuated safely. The four victims who died each had the initials A.S., E.A., and B., who had been successfully evacuated to the mulia hospital and A.C.R. who had been successfully evacuated to the Karubaga Hospital, Tolikara Regency. Meanwhile, one of the other deceased victims was a Papuan indigenous community who until now is still in the identification process,” explained the Head of Public Relations.
In addition, the five victims who were successfully evacuated in a safe state, each with the initials W.R., S.S., H.M., S.U., and J.M. The victims had received medical treatment and were referred to the Mulia Hospital for further treatment.
The Head of Public Relations added, The initial information obtained by officers in the field stated that the action was allegedly carried out by KKB Kodap X Tolikara led by Rambo Botak. However, the alleged involvement of the group is still being verified and investigated by investigators based on witness statements, evidence, and the results of the field investigation.
“We do not want to precede the results of the investigation. The identity and the responsible party will be conveyed after being supported by the results of the investigation and adequate evidence,” said the Head of the Task Force,
Responding to the incident, Illu Police Personnel led by Illu Police Chief IPTU Rajab Ilyas, S.H., along with Tolikara Police Personnel and Police Task Force who were members of Operation Peace Cartenz-2026 immediately went to the location to evacuate and provide initial treatment to the victims.
The evacuation process is carried out gradually until Monday, August 3, 2026 in the early morning while still prioritizing the safety of the victims and personnel. In the evacuation process, personnel had faced security disturbances in the form of fire contact with unidentified parties. However, the evacuation process was still carried out in a measured manner with safety as a priority.
“Currently, investigators continue to collect and examine evidence, ask for witness statements, and delve into various information to identify the perpetrator, reveal motives, modes, and ensure the responsible party, Regarding the articles that will be suspected, it will be determined based on the results of the investigation, evidence, and the construction of the case law. We will not precede the ongoing investigation process,” explained the Head of Public Relation Operation Peace Cartenz.
Based on the initial investigation and witness statements, the incident occurred when the workers were in the road project area in Kanggime District. Investigators are currently continuing to collect evidence, ask for witness statements, and delve into various relevant information to identify the perpetrator, reveal the motive for the attack, and confirm the alleged involvement of a certain group.
Head of Operation Peace Cartenz, Inspector General of Police. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized that the officers would conduct a thorough investigation based on the applicable legal provisions.

Currently, police officers who are members of the Operation Peace Cartenz-2026 together with the regional ranks continue to work to the maximum to uncover the perpetrator and motive behind this incident. The entire handling process is carried out professionally, measured, and in accordance with the provisions of the applicable law,” said the Head of Peace Operations Cartenz-2026.
He emphasized that public safety remains a priority in every handling of incidents in the operation area.
“In addition to conducting an investigation, we also prioritize the evacuation process and handling of all victims. We ensure that every development of the case will be handled accountably while still prioritizing the protection of the community,” he added.
The Police Task Force that is part of the Operation Peace Cartenz-2026 emphasized that every party that based on the results of the investigation and evidence is proven responsible for the incident will be processed in accordance with the applicable law.
