Yahukimo, Papua Highlands – The Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, together with the Yahukimo Regional Police and the Papua Regional Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) Battalion B assigned under operational control, is handling an assault incident that claimed the life of a National Police officer while carrying out his duties in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands.
The victim was identified as the late Brigadier Police Fredi Lukas Awes, a personnel member assigned under the operational control of the Enforcement Task Force of Operation Peace Cartenz 2026. On Monday (July 20, 2026), at approximately 11:30 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), he was found in the Halabok Paradiso Back Road agricultural complex, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, with multiple stab wounds allegedly inflicted by unidentified perpetrators. Police investigators are continuing their investigation to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the incident.
The victim was evacuated from the scene to Dekai Regional General Hospital for further medical examination. His body was subsequently flown to Jayapura City and has now been laid to rest at the family funeral home.
The Deputy Head Of Public Relation of the Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, Police Superintendent Andri Alam, S.I.K., told the media on Tuesday (July 21) that immediately after the incident, a joint team consisting of the Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, Yahukimo Regional Police, and Brimob Battalion B of the Papua Regional Police took swift law enforcement measures.
“Our personnel immediately secured the crime scene, conducted a crime scene investigation, collected evidence, interviewed witnesses, and launched an investigation and manhunt for those suspected of carrying out the assault that resulted in the victim’s death,” said Police Superintendent Andri Alam.
He emphasized that every stage of the investigation is being carried out professionally, objectively, and in accordance with applicable laws in order to identify the perpetrators and uncover the motive behind the attack.
Meanwhile, the Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2026, Inspector General of Police Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., expressed his deepest condolences over the passing of Brigadier Police Fredi Lukas Awes.
“We extend our deepest condolences for the loss of one of the Indonesian National Police’s finest officers who died while serving the nation. His dedication and sacrifice reflect the commitment and loyalty of Polri personnel in maintaining security and protecting the community. We assure the public that this incident will be handled professionally, proportionally, and in accordance with the law. Every necessary investigative measure is being taken to identify those responsible while ensuring that the public security situation remains safe and conducive,” said the Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2026.
Similarly, the Deputy Head of Peace Operation Cartenz 2026, Chief Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., stated that the joint team continues to intensify the investigation by collecting evidence, examining witnesses, and pursuing the perpetrators.
“We are fully committed to thoroughly uncovering both the perpetrators and the motive behind this incident. Every stage of the investigation is being conducted professionally, objectively, and in accordance with legal procedures. We also urge the public to remain calm and provide any information that may assist investigators in resolving this case,” he said.
