Jayapura – The Jayapura City Government appeals to all people to increase awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness, especially by not littering that can trigger floods, especially during the rainy season.
The Mayor of Jayapura, Abisai Rollo, emphasized that the habit of littering has a direct impact on environmental conditions, including increasing the risk of flooding in a number of vulnerable areas.
“So we remind the public to be more aware to throw garbage in its place,” he said in Jayapura, Monday.
According to him, the geographical condition of Jayapura City which consists of mountainous and valley areas makes this area quite vulnerable to floods, especially when rainfall is high. Water that flows from the hilly area often accumulates in lowland areas that become the location of residents’ settlements.
One of the areas that is considered vulnerable to flooding is the Dok IX area in North Jayapura District, which is relatively low and easily flooded, especially when there is a tide that aggravates the water condition.
In addition to the garbage problem, the Jayapura City Government also highlights logging activities and land excavation in mountainous areas for gold mining activities. These activities are considered to damage the environment and increase the risk of flooding and landslides.
The government hopes for a collective awareness from the community to maintain the environment, not only through good waste management, but also by maintaining the preservation of nature in the upstream region.
With this step, it is hoped that the potential disaster can be minimized and the quality of the environment in Jayapura City will be maintained for the sake of comfort and safety together.
