Komnas HAM: Press Freedom in Papua Must Be Safeguarded as a Human Right and a Pillar of Democracy

Jayapura – The Papua Representative Office of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) emphasized that press freedom in Papua continues to face serious challenges that require collective attention and commitment, ranging from limited understanding of the role of the press, media professionalism, to the need for stronger protection of journalists.

The statement was delivered by the Head of the Papua Provincial Representative Office of Komnas HAM, Frits Ramandey, during a journalism discussion titled “MBG, Period or Comma” and a journalist photo-poetry exhibition held to commemorate National Press Day (HPN) 2026 at Pondok Skyper Skyline, Abepura, Jayapura City, on Monday (February 9, 2026).

According to Frits, one of the fundamental challenges to press freedom in Papua is the limited awareness among certain parties regarding the press as a pillar of democracy and a partner in development.

“The press is still often perceived as a threat rather than a partner. In fact, the press plays a crucial role in maintaining transparency, overseeing public policies, and strengthening democracy,” Frits stressed.

He also noted that the lack of public understanding and empathy toward journalistic work has further narrowed the space for press freedom, particularly in regions with complex social and security dynamics such as Papua.

In addition, Frits highlighted the rapid growth of media outlets that is not always accompanied by professional management and adherence to journalistic ethics.

“The growth of media is a positive development, but it becomes problematic when it is not supported by sound media governance and compliance with the journalistic code of ethics,” he said.

In the context of local politics, Frits warned of the proliferation of partisan media, especially ahead of and during regional elections. He stated that such conditions could undermine press independence and erode public trust.

“Media outlets established to serve specific political interests pose a serious challenge to press freedom. Oversight and regulation are necessary to ensure that the press remains professional, independent, and oriented toward the public interest,” he explained.

Furthermore, Frits emphasized the importance of security forces developing greater sensitivity and a comprehensive understanding of the role of the press, particularly in supporting development acceleration, fostering a sense of security, and guaranteeing the public’s right to information.

“Press freedom is an integral part of human rights. Therefore, the state—including the government and security apparatus—must demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring a safe working environment for the press,” Frits concluded.

Komnas HAM hopes that through dialogue, education, and strengthened collective commitment, press freedom in Papua can continue to be upheld as the foundation of a healthy, humane, and just democracy.
