Magnitude 4.3 Earthquake Jolts Sarmi, Papua, Early Tuesday Morning

Sarmi, Papua — A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Sarmi region of Papua on Tuesday morning (November 4, 2025). According to official data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake occurred at approximately 04:57 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
BMKG reported that the epicenter was located 74 kilometers northwest of Sarmi, at coordinates 1.81° South Latitude and 139.08° East Longitude, with a depth of 24 kilometers below the surface.
“A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred at a depth of 24 km, located 74 km northwest of Sarmi, Papua,” BMKG stated through its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
As of now, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the quake. BMKG noted that the data remains preliminary and may be updated as more information becomes available.
Earthquakes are relatively common in Papua, as the region lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for high seismic activity.
