Jakarta – Deputy Chair of the DPD and Chair of the Papua Faction in the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Yorrys Raweyai, stated that his side is currently awaiting official instructions from the central government to initiate dialogue and seek comprehensive solutions to the ongoing conflict in Papua. He emphasized that the conflict has persisted for decades without signs of resolution.
During his statement at the Senayan parliamentary complex in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (May 27, 2025), Yorrys highlighted the importance of President Prabowo’s leadership in determining strategic steps that could serve as guidance in resolving Papua’s issues. He expressed concern over the recent escalation of violence in the past few weeks, which has resulted in numerous casualties and refugees.
Yorrys revealed that many refugees have left their hometowns without clear information about their fate and future. He stressed the need for the government to provide clarity regarding the steps toward conflict resolution, including long-term solutions, so that the people no longer live in uncertainty.
He also pointed out the necessity of a thorough evaluation of the security approach currently implemented in Papua. Yorrys assessed that deploying non-organic security personnel has only deepened wounds and trauma within the Papuan community, and has reinforced the perception that they are viewed merely as objects of security, not as human subjects.
Furthermore, Yorrys called for more intensive communication between the central government, regional governments, and the MPR Papua faction to collaboratively develop comprehensive solutions. He stated that the security approach thus far has been ineffective and has even worsened the situation, especially following the creation of new autonomous regions in Papua, which has further escalated the conflict.
At the same time, Filep Wamafma, Secretary of the MPR Papua faction, issued an official statement regarding the armed conflict in the mountainous regions such as Puncak, Puncak Jaya, Intan Jaya, and Nduga, which has recently intensified. He emphasized the need for concrete steps from involved parties to de-escalate tensions.
