Jayapura – A demonstration by students from Cenderawasih University (Uncen) in front of the campus gate in Papua on Thursday (May 22) turned chaotic, resulting in a police truck being set on fire. The students were protesting against the increase in single tuition fees (UKT).

The Chief of Jayapura City Police Resort, Commissioner of Police Fredrickus Maclarimboen, stated that four police officers were injured and one operational vehicle of the Jayapura City Police Resort was burned.

“The crowd attacked the officers by throwing stones, which led to four injuries and the burning of an operational truck,” said Commissioner of Police Fredrickus in Jayapura on Thursday (May 22).

Tensions escalated between students and police during the protest. According to Fredrickus, the officers securing the demonstration did not enter the campus area.

“We only provided security around the gate area and did not enter the campus grounds. Furthermore, the protest was not authorized by the Jayapura City Police Resort,” said Commissioner of Police Fredrickus.

The clash left four officers from the Jayapura City Police Resort injured after being hit by stones.

The injured officers are Head of Samapta Unit Commissioner L. Rumboy, Second Police Inspector Nursalam, First Police Brigadier Aan Krisanto, and First Police Brigadier Dicky. They are currently receiving medical treatment at Bhayangkara Hospital in Jayapura.
