Jayapura – In an effort to support the recovery of conditions in Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua, the Papua Regional Police (Polda) recommended the reopening of flights to Bilogai Airport on Friday (9/2). This decision was taken after the shooting and burning of buildings by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB).
Inspector General Pol Mathius D Fakhiri, Papua Police Chief, stated that the situation in Intan Jaya has now experienced significant improvement. “Intan Jaya is starting to become more conducive. I encourage the [Intan Jaya] Resort Police to strengthen and prepare security measures there,” said Fakhiri in Jayapura City on Friday (9/2/2024).
Fakhiri also explained that he had communicated with the Acting Governor of Central Papua, Ribka Haluk, to request that the Acting Regent of Intan Jaya, Apollos Bagau, come down directly to interact with the community. It is hoped that this step will create safe, peaceful and smooth conditions ahead of the 2024 General Election.
“I have asked the Acting Governor to instruct the Regent to come down directly, interact with the community, so that the final stages of the election can run smoothly,” he said.
Fakhiri emphasized that the security situation in Paniai Regency, Central Papua Province, had also returned to being conducive after a firefight occurred between security forces and the TPNPB group at Baya Biru Airport, Paniai. In this incident, a policeman and a civilian were injured.
“We will handle all matters with a kind and friendly approach so as not to disturb public security and order,” he added.
Fakhiri also said that security forces had prepared security measures at several points, including in Puncak Regency, Central Papua Province, as well as the Bintang Mountains and Lanny Jaya Districts in the Papua Mountains Province. “Basically, we have made thorough preparations to face all possibilities,” he stressed.
