Jayapura– Chairman of Barisan Merah Putih Papua Province, Yeri Stenly Hamadi, has condemned the alleged hostage-taking of nine civilians in Jila District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua.

Speaking in Jayapura on Saturday (August 22, 2026), Yeri stressed that civilians must not become victims of conflict or be used as political tools by any party. He also expressed concern over reports that women and children were among those affected by the incident.

“I strongly condemn and deeply regret the actions allegedly carried out by the TPNPB or armed criminal groups in taking civilians hostage in Jila District, Mimika Regency,” Yeri said.

According to Yeri, civilians, particularly women and children, must be protected and should never be targeted in armed conflicts.

“In my view, civilians must not be made victims of conflict and must not be used as political tools. Civilians, especially women and children, must not be targeted or taken hostage by any party,” he said.

Yeri called on those responsible for the hostage-taking to immediately release all civilians being held so they can safely return to their families.

He also urged security personnel, including the Damai Cartenz Operations Task Force, to take firm law enforcement measures against groups involved in criminal acts and activities that disturb public security in Papua, while ensuring that all legal processes comply with applicable laws and regulations.

“We urge the security authorities, particularly the Damai Cartenz Operations Task Force, to take firm law enforcement action against groups involved in criminal activities and those disturbing the peace and security of communities in Papua,” he said.

In addition to condemning the hostage-taking, Yeri expressed his appreciation to the Damai Cartenz Operations Task Force for uncovering the murder case involving the late Brigadier Police Officer Fredy Lukas Awe in Yahukimo. He expressed hope that the legal process against those involved would continue in accordance with applicable laws.

Yeri also appealed to the people of Papua, particularly residents of Mimika Regency, to remain calm and not be easily provoked by unverified information.

“Let us work together to maintain peace and security so that community activities can continue properly. People are also encouraged to obtain accurate information from security authorities and the police,” he concluded.
