Papua – Efforts to improve human resource quality in Papua continue to show positive progress, driven by strengthened affirmative policies and cross-sector collaboration. The government, alongside education stakeholders and industry partners, is increasingly focused on expanding access to higher education while ensuring its relevance to workforce demands.

A key initiative includes the allocation of 700 higher education affirmative scholarships for West Papua in 2026. The policy reflects a strong commitment to providing broader opportunities for young Papuans to pursue advanced education.

Secretary of the West Papua Education Office, Sudjanti Kamat, stated that this year’s program is being implemented earlier to align with the national university admission schedule.

“Penyesuaian ini bertujuan memberikan kepastian bagi peserta serta memastikan proses seleksi berjalan lebih efektif dan tepat sasaran,” she said.

Beyond expanding access, the government is also providing preparatory support for scholarship recipients before they enter university. This initiative aims to strengthen academic readiness and adaptability among students.

“Kami ingin memastikan mahasiswa tidak hanya diterima, tetapi juga mampu menyelesaikan studi dengan baik,” Sudjanti added.

Funding support for the program comes from the central government and is reinforced by regional funding through the Special Autonomy scheme. Scholarship recipients will also receive additional assistance to support their academic needs, ensuring continuity throughout their studies.

In parallel, efforts to enhance education quality in Papua are being reinforced through partnerships between universities and industry. Cenderawasih University has established a strategic collaboration with PT Freeport Indonesia to build an inclusive and sustainable education ecosystem.

Rector of Cenderawasih University, Oscar Oswald O. Wambrauw, emphasized that the partnership marks an important step in advancing higher education in Papua.

“Sinergi ini merupakan komitmen nyata untuk menghasilkan lulusan yang unggul, adaptif, dan siap menghadapi tantangan masa depan,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas, highlighted the importance of aligning education with industry needs.

“Kerja sama ini memungkinkan terciptanya SDM yang kompeten sesuai kebutuhan industri tanpa mengabaikan standar akademik,” he said.

Through these strategic measures, Papua continues to make steady progress in education development, laying a strong foundation for producing competitive and future-ready generations.
