Papua — In commemoration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, a number of Papuan leaders have urged communities to uphold peace, unity, and support for development in the region. They stressed that the historic occasion should serve as a turning point for all Papuans to move beyond conflict and strengthen collective welfare.

Secretary-General of the Central Executive Board of Barisan Merah Putih Republic of Indonesia, Ali Kabiay, emphasized that the 80th Independence Day is a vital moment for every element of the nation to contribute to Indonesia’s progress. “As citizens and as young Papuans, we must remain united with the government in building our country for a better future,” he said in Papua on Tuesday (August 19, 2025).

Ali further expressed hope that Papua’s younger generation would become the driving force for peace and development, ensuring that the land is known as a peaceful, prosperous, and “little paradise on earth.” He also conveyed prayers for Indonesia to advance as a moral, dignified, and prosperous nation.

Similar sentiments were voiced by Johni Saiba, Chairman of the Barisan Merah Putih branch in South Manokwari Regency. He highlighted that the Independence Day theme, “United, Sovereign, Prosperous People for an Advanced Indonesia,” aligns with the nation’s long-term vision toward Indonesia Emas 2045. “Let this celebration inspire greater prosperity for the people and drive Indonesia’s progress,” he said.

The leaders also reminded all segments of society — from traditional and religious figures to youth and women — to reject provocations that could divide national unity. They underlined that Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day must be embraced as an opportunity to strengthen dialogue, solidarity, and cooperation between the people and the government.
