Papua — A number of Papuan leaders, together with the Acting Governor of Papua, have called on the public to safeguard peace and security in the aftermath of the gubernatorial election re-run. They emphasized the importance of remaining calm, patient, and rejecting any provocations that could trigger instability.
Acting Governor of Papua, Agus Fatoni, reaffirmed that the regional government, alongside traditional leaders, the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP), and various community elements, are committed to ensuring a stable post-election atmosphere.
“Let us work together to maintain public order so that Papua remains safe and comfortable,” he said.
Echoing this, Papuan traditional leader Yanto Eluay reminded the public not to be swayed by divisive issues.
“Papua must choose the path of unity. We must also be patient while awaiting the official plenary results from the Election Commission after the re-vote,” Yanto stated.
Youth leader Absalom Yarisetouw and Papuan senator Paul Finsen Mayor also voiced similar appeals. They stressed that youth participation is crucial in defusing tensions and strengthening social solidarity. Their message underscored that stability in Papua is not solely the responsibility of the government and security forces, but of all segments of society.
This collective call highlights Papua’s efforts to advance democratic maturity. By prioritizing dialogue, unity, and respect for both tradition and law, Papua is expected to sustain peace in the wake of its political process.
