Jayapura — Following the repeat gubernatorial election (PSU) in Papua Province, several community leaders have called for peace to ensure public security and order.

One such appeal came from Marthen Rumbekwan, a prominent Seireri community figure based in Jayapura City. He urged all elements of society—including traditional leaders, religious figures, youth, and students—to remain united and support the democratic process in Papua.

“As Papuans, let us safeguard a peaceful and secure situation. This repeat election is not just about choosing a leader, but also reflects our maturity in democracy and our shared responsibility for the development and welfare of the people of Papua,” Marthen said on Saturday (August 17).

He also linked his message to the commemoration of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day on August 17, emphasizing that maintaining peace in Papua is a way of honoring the sacrifices of the nation’s founders.

“I call on all Papuans to keep the situation safe and conducive,” he added.

Marthen further stressed that political differences and social dynamics should not become sources of division. Instead, he said, such diversity should be seen as a strength to foster mutual respect and collective progress in Papua.

“Papua is our shared home. Only through peace can we build and bring prosperity to all Papuans,” he concluded.
