Warm Welcome for Operation Peace Cartenz: A Human-Centered Approach to Security in Papua

Wamena, Highland Papua — A recent patrol conducted by Task Force Operation Peace Cartenz 2025 in Walesi District, Jayawijaya Regency, marked a visible shift in how security forces engage with communities in Papua—moving away from rigid enforcement toward a more compassionate, human-centered approach.

Held on Monday, June 30, the activity transcended routine law enforcement. Officers, led by local commanders, immersed themselves in the community—not with intimidation or force, but with open arms. They distributed national flags, sang with children, facilitated games, and offered basic health services. It was an atmosphere filled with warmth, trust, and mutual respect.

The response from residents was overwhelmingly positive. Children who once viewed security personnel with fear now approached them with joy. Adults who used to keep their distance began to engage in conversations and interactions. What was once a fragile trust has started to rebuild—fueled by simple gestures: a smile, a helping hand, and a visible, caring presence.

This transformation has helped foster a more stable and peaceful environment in Jayawijaya. When law enforcement is not seen as an external force but as part of the social fabric, tensions tend to dissipate. People feel heard, valued, and protected—not through coercion, but through empathy and presence.

Free healthcare provided during the patrol further reinforced the message that the state is not a distant entity confined to policy and law, but a tangible presence that serves citizens on the ground. Medical checks for children and basic treatments for residents are evidence that public services can—and should—reach even the most remote areas.

This evolving approach by Operation Peace Cartenz demonstrates that lasting peace and security cannot be built solely through armed patrols. Instead, it requires genuine connections, emotional understanding, and consistent, humane engagement with the people. In a region often defined by its geographical challenges and complex social dynamics, this model is a path worth investing in.

The presence of kind and compassionate officers in Papua is no longer just a tactical maneuver—it is a cornerstone of long-term peacebuilding, rooted in proximity, empathy, and shared humanity. And from the cool highlands of Jayawijaya, hope is beginning to take root.
