Jose: Catching Up, Papua’s Young Generation Needs Soft Skills

Wamena – Jose Ohee, SS., M.Hum., popularly known as KK Jose, a renowned motivational speaker from Papua, emphasized that to catch up with development in Papua, the younger generation needs more than just technical skills — soft skills are even more essential.

This statement was made by KK Jose after conducting a self-development training for Papuan human resources (OAP), themed “Sharpening the Quality of Papua’s Human Resources through Entrepreneurship and Workforce-Based Education”, held at the Tongkonan Building in Wamena on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

KK Jose explained that the purpose of the activity is to provide knowledge and foster the development of Papua’s human resources so that the younger generation can bridge the existing gap. “So far, there has been a lack of proper problem identification. People often think we need more skills, but in fact, what we truly need is soft skills so we can properly apply the skills we already have,” he said.

He further stated that what young Papuans need is not just knowledge of history, human civilization, or other academic knowledge, but rather the readiness to pursue progress and overcome challenges.

“What I teach is the background material, then I explain techniques on how to manage oneself and the surrounding environment to progress just like people in Java, Europe, and other advanced regions. These methods are taught at major universities,” he said, while mentioning that this event is his third, after similar sessions in Serui and Timika.

Furthermore, KK Jose, who was the sole speaker at the event, noted that what he and the local committee are doing is merely an initial step, hoping that such initiatives can be formally supported by the government in the future.

“There is no direct official support from the government yet, but there are individuals — officials and council members — who have contributed from their own pockets. But this is a good start. Moving forward, we hope the government will see the importance of this and provide support. Earlier, I mentioned that besides building governor offices, MRP and DPR buildings, the government should also build large libraries and training centers for human resource development,” he hoped.

Fransina Daby, a member of the Papua Pegunungan Provincial House of Representatives (DPRP), who also supported the event, expressed her gratitude, believing that through activities like this, the mindset of the young generation in Papua’s highlands can be transformed.

“As was explained earlier, infrastructure comes second; what matters most is the development of Papua’s human resources. Only when the people change will Papua truly advance and transform,” she said.

According to her, the government must support activities that focus on developing the mindset and capacity of young Papuans, just like the program conducted with KK Jose. “The government must not stay silent. We all need to open our hearts and support our young people to move forward,” she emphasized.

The OAP human resource development training with KK Jose took place over two days (Thursday and Friday). Similar events are planned to be held in Jayapura and several other cities across Papua. Hundreds of youths and teenagers from various organizations in Wamena participated in the training.
