Biak Numfor, Papua – The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, launched in Biak Numfor Regency on February 17, 2025, continues to show a positive impact on students in the region. Now in its second week, the program has successfully increased school attendance.

The Head of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) of Biak Numfor Regency, Diana Klemen, stated that the MBG program has reached four schools: SD Inpres Adibai, SD Inpres Sundei, SD Inpres Kajasbo, and SMP Negeri 1 Biak Timur. Every day, the main kitchen in Samofa District distributes 491 meal portions to students.

The government aims to provide 3,500 meal portions daily for students in Biak Numfor Regency, benefiting an estimated 3,337 students in Biak Timur and Oridek Districts. Meal distribution is carried out using three operational vehicles, including box trucks and pick-ups, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery.

“We conducted simulations beforehand to ensure that distribution runs on time and without issues,” said Diana Klemen on Tuesday (2/25).

Currently, the MBG kitchen in Biak Numfor is the only operational kitchen in the area. A total of 47 workers, including nutritionists and accountants, are involved in meal production. Ingredients for the program are sourced from local suppliers, such as Maju Makmur in Biak for rice and spices, as well as local farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders for vegetables and animal protein.

The meals served are designed by nutritionists and vary daily, offering a balanced composition of protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, and fruits. The cost per meal portion is set at IDR 27,000, adjusted to the living cost index in Biak Numfor Regency.

Diana Klemen emphasized that the program provides tangible benefits for students, especially those living in rural areas. Many students who previously came to school hungry can now enjoy nutritious meals regularly, improving their motivation and concentration.

“Children who have to walk long distances to school are now more eager to attend because they know a healthy meal is waiting for them,” she added.

Moving forward, the MBG program in Biak Numfor will continue to expand with support from various stakeholders to ensure that all students in the region can benefit equally.

Meanwhile, the Distribution Coordinator of the Kitong Bisa Foundation, Faizal Salendra, stated that they continuously monitor local food security, particularly in West Biak and East Biak. They are also calculating margins and anticipating potential challenges in providing 3,500 meal portions per day.

“We ensure that all ingredients used are always fresh and meet the standards of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). Not just any ingredient can be used in this program,” concluded Faizal.
