Papua, Indonesia – As Indonesia prepares to celebrate its Independence Day on August 17, 2024, the nation’s attention is focused on the National Flag Hoisting Troop (Paskibraka) tasked with carrying out the ceremonial duties.
Among the most anticipated roles in the ceremony is the honor of being the flag bearer, and this year, the privilege goes to two remarkable young women: Naila Aulita Alqubra Sinapoy and Lilly Indiani Suparman Wenda. These two “Srikandi Nusantara” will lead the flag procession, with Naila carrying the Indonesian flag and Lilly holding the Proclamation Text, as they move from Balikpapan Airport to the Nusantara Palace at the new capital city (IKN).
What makes this year’s event particularly significant is that Lilly Indiani Suparman Wenda hails from Papua, specifically from the newly established province of Papua Pegunungan. Originally trained for a different role, Lilly’s dedication and perseverance earned her the prestigious position of flag bearer.
This achievement is especially noteworthy as it marks the first time in a decade that a flag bearer from Papua has been selected for the Independence Day Ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Lilly Indiani Suparman Wenda’s selection is a source of immense pride, not only for her family and community but for the entire Papua region, as she represents the talent and determination of Papua’s youth on a national stage.
