Yahukimo – The Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation Task Force responded quickly to a shooting incident allegedly carried out by the Yahukimo XVI Kodap Armed Group (KKB) against civilians on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan Province, on Tuesday (April 28, 2026).
The incident occurred at approximately 11:22 a.m. WIT and was immediately followed up with a crime scene investigation by officers at 1:15 p.m. WIT.
Two civilians were injured in this incident, identified as AA (26) and NM (36). Both suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and thigh, and are currently conscious and receiving medical treatment at Dekai Regional Hospital. Furthermore, one of the victims’ four-wheeled vehicles was damaged.
Based on the initial investigation, the perpetrators are suspected to be two individuals on a motorcycle who suddenly attacked the victim.
The incident began when the victim was crossing the intersection towards the employee dormitory area at the PJPR Complex. On the way, the victim was allegedly followed by the perpetrators, who then fired shots, injuring the victim. Following the incident, the perpetrators fled the scene.
Crime scene investigation results indicate that officers have photographed and measured the location, determined the location of the incident, and investigated the surrounding area to support the case investigation. Preliminary results indicate there were no fatalities in the incident, but there was material damage in the form of vehicle damage.
The Deputy Head of the Public Relations Task Force for the Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation, AKBP Andria, S.I.K., when contacted by the media (April 28), explained that authorities are currently conducting an intensive investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive for the attack.
“Officers have moved quickly to process the crime scene, search for clues and evidence in the field, and pursue the perpetrator. The investigation is ongoing to ensure the perpetrator is quickly identified and processed according to the law,” explained AKBP Andria.
He added that the perpetrator’s modus operandi is suspected to be a swift attack on civilians passing by, potentially causing security disturbances and unrest in the community.
“This is a serious act of violence that suddenly targets civilians. Public safety is our top priority, so we will respond to any form of violence swiftly, measuredly, and professionally,” he stressed.
The Head of the Carstensz-2026 Peace Operation, Inspector General of Police Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., emphasized that there is zero tolerance for any form of violence against civilians. Perpetrators will be dealt with firmly in accordance with applicable law, with the threat of severe penalties.
“Every act of armed violence against the public is a serious crime. We ensure that the perpetrators will be pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he stressed.
The perpetrators could be charged under multiple articles in the Criminal Code (Law Number 1 of 2023) and Emergency Law Number 12 of 1951 concerning illegal firearms possession, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of the Carstensz-2026 Peace Operation, Senior Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., urged the public to remain calm, increase their vigilance, and immediately report any information related to the incident to officers.
“We urge the public to remain calm, not be easily provoked, and immediately report any information related to the perpetrators. We also guarantee the confidentiality of information received from the public to support the investigation of this case,” he said.
The Carstensz-2026 Peace Operation Task Force affirmed its commitment to continuously strengthening preventive measures and law enforcement to maintain security and stability in the Papua Highlands region and provide maximum protection to the public.
