Mimika – Efforts to maintain security and social harmony in the Kapiraya area continue to be strengthened through a human-centered approach and local wisdom. The Head of the Mee Tribe of Central Papua, Melkias Moyapa, has called on all parties, including the Central Papua Provincial Government and relevant regional administrations, to work together in resolving boundary issues in a peaceful and dignified manner.
Melkias emphasized that the situation in Kapiraya must be handled wisely to prevent unrest within the community. He affirmed that the issue is purely a customary matter concerning territorial boundaries between the Mee Tribe and the Kamoro Tribe, and therefore must be resolved through dialogue, brotherhood, and humanitarian values.
“This issue should not be approached with emotion, but resolved with calmness and a strong sense of family,” he stated during a phone interview on Monday (March 23).
As a traditional leader, Melkias highlighted the importance of maintaining security stability as the foundation of community life. He urged all elements, both society and government, to jointly create a conducive environment so that social activities and development can proceed smoothly.
During a previous meeting in Timika, he also encouraged the government to take an active role as a facilitator and mediator in bridging inter-tribal dialogue. According to him, there are three key steps that must be carried out in a balanced and humane manner.
First, fair law enforcement to ensure that any violations are handled transparently and justice is upheld for all parties.
Second, humanitarian recovery by providing attention to affected communities, including efforts to rebuild houses that were burned, as a form of care and protection of basic rights.
Third, strengthening the role of customary institutions by involving tribal leaders, religious figures, and the Indigenous Community Institution (LMA) in deliberation and consensus to achieve a sustainable peaceful agreement.
“We are all brothers. It is time for us to sit together and resolve this issue by prioritizing humanitarian values and the teachings of God, without conflicts that harm any party,” he stressed.
Melkias also expressed hope that leaders and customary institutions of the Kamoro Tribe would be equally willing to open space for peaceful customary dialogue, in order to create security and unity in the Kapiraya area.
With a spirit of togetherness, a human-centered approach, and respect for local customs and culture, it is hoped that the situation in Kapiraya will remain safe, peaceful, and serve as a model for dignified conflict resolution in Papua.
