Dekai — A shooting incident against a civilian occurred in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Mountains. A man named Suwono, a water tanker driver, was shot by an unknown assailant (OTK) in the Moroccan Village area on Thursday morning (February 12, 2026).
The incident occurred while the victim was driving a water tanker from Dekai City to deliver clean water to a ship owned by PT Bintang Timur. Upon arriving in Moroccan Village, shots were fired from the bushes on the left side of the road, hitting the victim.
The initially calm situation turned into panic. Local residents attempted to provide first aid while reporting the incident. Joint personnel from the Cartensz 2026 Peace Operation Task Force and the Yahukimo Police immediately responded and moved quickly to the scene. The victim was then evacuated from the Km-7 area to Dekai Regional Hospital for medical treatment.
The Head of Cartensz 2026 Peace Operation, Brigadier General Pol. Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., emphasized that the authorities will not allow acts of violence against civilians to continue.
“The victims were working to transport basic necessities, such as clean water. This is an intolerable act. We moved quickly to evacuate the victims and secure the situation. Law enforcement will be carried out firmly against the perpetrators,” stated Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani.
He added that public safety is the top priority in every step of Operation Peace Carstensz.
“Our presence here is to ensure that the public can carry out their activities safely. There should be no fear as residents seek a living or carry out their daily work,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of Operation Peace Carstensz 2026, Senior Commissioner Adarma Sinaga, S.I.K., M.Hum., stated that personnel are currently conducting searches around the incident location to anticipate potential further disturbances.
“The joint team has secured the area and is conducting investigative measures. We have also increased patrols along vital routes to ensure public activities continue,” said Senior Commissioner Adarma Sinaga.
The swift action of the authorities is considered successful in preventing the situation from escalating. Residents’ activities around Dekai are observed to be continuing with additional security from the authorities.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at Dekai Regional Hospital, while authorities continue to investigate to identify the perpetrators of the shooting. The Carstensz 2026 Peace Operation Task Force ensures that the legal process is carried out and the safety of the Yahukimo community remains a top priority.
