BIAK, Indonesia – Ahead of the December 1st date, Frids Semuel Arfayan, Chairman of the Biak Numfor Branch Leadership Council of the Red and White Front (Barisan Merah Putih/BMP), has issued an official statement urging the public to maintain security stability and correct misconceptions surrounding the date.

Arfayan firmly stated that December 1st is internationally recognized as World AIDS Day and is not a commemoration of Papuan independence.

“I understand that December 1st is often associated with certain political narratives in Papua, but it is important to understand that the date is not Papua’s independence day,” Arfayan explained.

He elaborated that claims by some groups declaring December 1st as the independence day of West Papua refer to the historical event of the raising of the Morning Star flag and the establishment of the New Guinea Council. However, Arfayan emphasized that this claim lacks legal recognition.

“This independence claim is not recognized by the Indonesian government nor the international community. Papua is an inalienable part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI),” he asserted.

Arfayan reminded the public that the issue is highly sensitive and has the potential to spark tensions. He invited all parties to wisely understand the historical context of the claim while prioritizing national harmony and unity.

In his statement, Arfayan also highlighted the various development efforts continuously undertaken by the government to improve the welfare of the Papuan people, covering infrastructure, education, and health sectors.

Addressing potential security disruptions, Arfayan revealed that the December 1st issue often becomes a focal point as it can trigger activities that disturb public order. In anticipation, security reinforcement measures are typically intensified.

“The spread of inaccurate or provocative information regarding the Papua issue can worsen the situation. Let us work together to maintain peace and unity in the land of Papua,” he appealed.

Beyond the December 1st issue, his office is also focusing on security during the Christmas and New Year period. Increased public activity, potential security disturbances, and smooth transportation are particular concerns.

Arfayan stressed that community participation is vital in maintaining security. He urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and not be provoked by unaccountable information.

“Maintaining security and public order is a collective responsibility. Through the collaboration of all components of Papuan society, especially in Biak Numfor, we can create a safe and conducive environment,” concluded Frids Semuel Arfayan.
