Jayapura, September 2, 2025 – The Jayapura City Police (Polresta Jayapura) deployed 700 joint personnel to secure a peaceful protest organized by university students at several key locations across Jayapura, Papua, on Tuesday (Sept 2, 2025).
Jayapura Police Chief Fredrikus W.A. Maklarimboen stated that the large deployment was intended to ensure that the protest proceeded in a safe and orderly manner, without disturbing public order.

“Every citizen has the right to express their opinion in public. Our role is to safeguard that right by ensuring the demonstration remains peaceful and follows legal procedures,” said the Police Chief while monitoring the situation in Abepura.

The peaceful protest, which began in the morning, involved hundreds of students from various universities in Jayapura. They gathered on campus before marching toward government buildings to voice a range of concerns, including social issues and public policy criticism.

Why was such a large security presence deemed necessary? According to Chief Maklarimboen, the deployment was a preventive measure to minimize the risk of public disorder and to ensure that regular activities in the city could continue uninterrupted. Officers were strategically stationed at protest points and potential conflict zones, supported by mobile reserve units on standby.

In addition to the 700 personnel from the Jayapura City Police and Heram Sector Police, the Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua) also placed 9,300 personnel on standby across the province as part of broader security preparations in anticipation of future demonstrations.

The police had coordinated in advance with university authorities, community leaders, and protest organizers to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and prevent provocation or violence.

“We urge all participants to remain calm, respect public order, and avoid actions that could trigger unrest. Your message can be heard without resorting to chaos,” emphasized AKBP Fredrikus.

The protest was scheduled to end at 1:00 p.m. local time (WIT), after which demonstrators were expected to disperse peacefully and return to their respective locations without disrupting local residents or traffic.
