Jayapura – Police in Jayapura have arrested a man identified by his initials RGD on allegations of committing religious blasphemy through social media posts. The arrest took place on Sunday night (August 24, 2025) in the Hawaii area of Sentani, Jayapura Regency.
Jayapura Police Criminal Investigation Unit Chief, AKP Alamsyah Ali, said the case originated from RGD’s post in a Facebook group under the account name Gad Dimara.
“In his post, the suspect wrote statements offensive to Muslims by insulting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), while also referring to Christian congregations as ‘devil’s followers.’ Based on public reports, we immediately moved to secure the suspect,” Alamsyah explained on Monday (August 25, 2025).
RGD has been charged under Article 28 (2) in conjunction with Article 45 (2) of Indonesia’s Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE), carrying a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a fine of up to IDR 1 billion (approx. USD 65,000).
Following the arrest, police filed an official report and conducted preliminary questioning before transferring the case to the Papua Regional Police Cyber Directorate for further investigation.
During interrogation, RGD admitted his actions were triggered by anger after receiving a video from an individual identified as Putri Doyo. However, investigators clarified that Putri Doyo is not considered a suspect in the case.
“The suspect realized his actions were wrong, but the post was still made deliberately. As evidence, we have secured one mobile phone and the Facebook account under the name Gad Dimara,” Alamsyah added.
