Jayapura, Papua – The South Papua Provincial Government is expanding its efforts to improve education by developing student boarding facilities aimed at strengthening access to learning and supporting character development for Indigenous Papuan students.
South Papua Governor Apolo Safanpo said the newly inaugurated boys’ dormitory at SMAK Seminari Yohanes Penginjil Asmat in Asmat Regency is expected to become more than just a residence for students, serving as a place where they can develop strong moral values alongside academic knowledge and practical skills.
“We hope this dormitory will become a place for character education, where students can develop good morals while gaining knowledge, technology, and practical skills at school,” Apolo Safanpo said.
According to the governor, the facility is expected to contribute to the growth and development of children in Asmat Regency by providing an environment that supports their educational journey.
Since 2024, the South Papua Provincial Government has constructed four student dormitories in Asmat, Mappi, Boven Digoel, and Merauke regencies. The government plans to expand the program by building additional dormitories in every regency across the province.
“The construction of boarding facilities in every regency is intended to accommodate all children, especially Indigenous Papuan children, so they can remain focused on pursuing their education,” he said.
In addition to supporting education, the provincial government will build a groundwater well near the SMAK Seminari Yohanes Penginjil Asmat dormitory to provide clean water for nearby communities.
“We hope what we are doing will help ease the burden on children and the people of Asmat Regency,” he added.
