Jakarta – Member of Commission III of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), Soedeson Tandra, has urged the government to pay greater attention to the welfare of police personnel stationed in Papua, in commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the Indonesian National Police (Bhayangkara Day), which falls on Monday, July 1, 2025.

“On the occasion of the 79th Bhayangkara Day, we must reaffirm the importance of ensuring the welfare of all police officers, especially those serving in Papua,” Soedeson said in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday.

According to him, police personnel assigned to Papua face unique challenges such as difficult geography, limited infrastructure, and complex social dynamics unlike any other region in Indonesia.

“These conditions require special attention in terms of facilities, logistical support, and improvements to the welfare of officers on duty,” he said.

“They are on the front lines in maintaining stability and public order, often under difficult and demanding circumstances.”

Soedeson also emphasized the importance of career development within the police force, especially by providing educational opportunities for officers who have shown dedication and achievement in the field.

“This is especially important for those serving in high-risk and remote areas like Papua,” added the legislator from the Papua Tengah (Central Papua) electoral district.

He encouraged the government to prioritize outstanding personnel in Papua by providing easier access to further education, both at the non-commissioned officer (bintara) and commissioned officer (perwira) levels.

“Those who excel should be given priority to pursue further education as a form of recognition for their service and dedication,” he said.

On a related note, Soedeson expressed his appreciation for the recent visit by Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani to Papua, which he viewed as a strong sign of the central government’s commitment to the region — in both security and economic development aspects.

He also encouraged Minister Sri Mulyani to increase the state budget allocation for the National Police to support operational needs and enhance the welfare of officers in Papua, so that they can carry out their duties to the fullest under challenging conditions.

“We hope the Finance Minister will consider increasing the budget for the National Police, especially for deployments in Papua. Adequate welfare directly correlates with the quality of service and dedication they can provide on the ground,” he stated.

Soedeson concluded by stressing that synergy between government ministries, security forces, and the Papuan people is crucial to advancing development in the region.

“Papua not only needs a security-based approach, but also social justice, which can be achieved through equitable welfare and quality public services,” he said.
