Luky Mahakena: Peace is the Path to a Prosperous Papua

Mimika – A call for peace once again resonates from the Land of Papua. This time, it comes from Luky Mahakena, a prominent community leader in Mimika and the Chairman of the Regional Early Awareness Forum (FKDM) of Mimika Regency. He urges all Papuans to work together in maintaining stability and supporting law enforcement efforts for a peaceful and prosperous future in Papua.

As the former Rector of the University of Timika, Luky believes that security is the foundation of development. “We cannot talk about prosperity without peace. A secure environment will accelerate development and bring tangible benefits to the people,” he said on Friday (May 23).

Luky emphasized that security goes beyond law enforcement; it also involves the crucial role of traditional leaders and community figures in guiding residents to stay on the path of peace and avoid being provoked by issues that may spark conflict.

He expressed concern over the continued violent actions of armed criminal groups (KKB) operating in the Papuan highlands. “This is a clear violation of the law and human rights. There is no place for violence, especially when it targets civilians,” he stated firmly.

For this reason, Luky voiced his full support for the firm yet measured efforts of Operation Peace Cartenz 2025 led by the Indonesian National Police (Polri). He stressed that resolving conflict in Central Papua must prioritize a law enforcement approach over a military one.

In closing, Luky called on all communities to unite under the spirit of love and compassion, reminding everyone that Papua is an integral part of the Republic of Indonesia. “We have a bright future if we choose to live in peace. The central government is committed to developing Papua, and it’s our duty to take an active role,” he concluded.
