Papua Selatan Prioritizes Basic Services and Welfare in 2025 Development Agenda

Merauke, Papua Selatan – The Provincial Government of Papua Selatan has decided to prioritize the fulfillment of basic services and the improvement of community welfare in its 2025 development agenda. This decision was made during the Regional Development Planning Forum (Musrenbang) held in Merauke in May 2025.

According to Papua Selatan Deputy Governor Paskalis Imadawa, enhancing basic services is crucial to addressing the fundamental needs of the region’s population. “We are committed to ensuring that the planned development delivers direct benefits to the community, particularly in the sectors of education, health, and the economy,” he stated.

The 2025 development policy focuses on strengthening governance, reducing extreme poverty, and improving human resource quality through education and healthcare services. Additionally, the government aims to drive economic recovery by accelerating investments and creating more job opportunities, especially for indigenous Papuans.

The Provincial Government will oversee the implementation of each program using an inclusive approach. It also emphasizes the importance of empowering vulnerable groups, such as the indigenous women known as mama-mama Papua, who are often impacted by the loss of traditional livelihoods.

The Musrenbang was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the central government, traditional leaders, and local communities. This collaboration is expected to strengthen collective commitment toward achieving welfare in Papua Selatan.

The primary targets of these programs are regions with the highest needs for basic services, including remote areas that have been difficult to access.

The initiatives are set to be implemented gradually starting in early 2025, with a long-term goal of creating a more prosperous and competitive Papua Selatan.

Through this approach, the Provincial Government of Papua Selatan hopes to bring meaningful changes to its communities and establish the region as a model for successful development in newly autonomous regions.
