Situation in Puncak Jaya Ahead of Constitutional Court Decision on Regional Election Dispute, Deputy Regional Police Chief Steps In

PUNCAK JAYA — The Deputy Chief of Papua Tengah Regional Police, Chief Commissioner of Police Muhajir, conducted a working visit to Puncak Jaya Regency to monitor the security situation (Kamtibmas) ahead of the Constitutional Court’s decision regarding the vote recount for the Regent and Deputy Regent election on Saturday (May 3, 2025).

Chief Commissioner Muhajir arrived at Mulia Airport aboard a Smart Air PK-SNJ aircraft and was welcomed directly by the Puncak Jaya Police Chief, Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Achmad Fauzan.

Chief Commissioner Muhajir stated that the visit was to ensure security ahead of the Constitutional Court’s scheduled ruling on May 5 regarding the Regent and Deputy Regent of Puncak Jaya.

“This afternoon, we are here in person to monitor and ensure that the security situation remains safe and under control,” he said.

He added that the police will continue to take preventive measures such as increasing community patrols, conducting weapons raids, and optimizing security at checkpoints that are vulnerable to clashes between supporters of the rival candidates.

“We are doing our utmost to maintain a secure and peaceful situation, especially as we approach the decision day on May 5,” said the Deputy Chief of Papua Tengah Regional Police.

He also called on the public, especially supporters of both candidates, to exercise restraint.

“Whoever is ultimately elected as Regent and Deputy Regent, let us accept the result peacefully without any further acts of retaliation or violence that would only harm ourselves and the broader community,” concluded Chief Commissioner Muhajir.
