Renovation of Wamena Education Stadium: Supporting Sports and Economic Growth in Papua Mountains

Wamena — The Provincial Government of Papua Mountains has allocated a budget of IDR 20 billion for the renovation of the Wamena Education Stadium, funded through the 2024 Regional Budget (APBD).
Acting Governor of Papua Mountains, Velix V. Wanggai, announced on Saturday in Wamena that the stadium’s renovation has been completed within a year. The facility is now ready to host various sporting events, including the Papua Mountains Zone Four League.
“Alhamdulillah, with this renovation, the Wamena Education Stadium can now serve as a venue for sports activities that benefit our community,” said Velix.
He emphasized that the development of the stadium reflects the commitment of the Papua Mountains Provincial Government to advancing sports in the region, particularly in Jayawijaya Regency. Proper sports facilities are expected to inspire greater enthusiasm and passion for sports among the community, as well as symbolize the area’s infrastructural progress.
The Acting Governor also highlighted the economic benefits the stadium brings to the local community. “When regular sports events are held here, the economy of local vendors, such as food sellers, pinang sellers, parking attendants, and other small business owners, will improve due to the influx of visitors to the stadium,” he explained. He encouraged residents to collectively support the optimal use of this facility for mutual benefit.
Velix also urged the Jayawijaya Regency Government to ensure proper maintenance and management of the facility. “This stadium is a vital asset for Jayawijaya Regency. If well-maintained and properly managed, it will not only serve as a sports venue but also play a significant role in supporting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the area,” he concluded with optimism.
The renovation of this stadium is expected to encourage more active community participation in sports while creating economic opportunities from the events held at the Wamena Education Stadium. This project marks a pivotal step in establishing quality sports facilities across the Papua Mountains region.
