Polri Commits to Upholding Peace and Development in Papua

Yalimo – The Indonesian National Police (Polri) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the well-being of the people of Papua through a humanistic and persuasive approach. This was conveyed by the Head of Public Relations for Operation Damai Cartenz, Kombes Pol Yusuf Sutejo, in response to various negative issues circulating regarding the situation in Papua.
According to Kombes Yusuf, Polri, together with the Indonesian National Military (TNI) and local governments, is focused on supporting development in Papua while ensuring the safety of the community from the threats posed by armed criminal groups (KKB), which often disrupt security stability.
“We are in Papua not to create conflict but to protect the people. The approach we take prioritizes dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and empowering local communities. Polri, together with all elements of the nation, remains committed to bringing peace to the Land of Papua,” said Kombes Yusuf in his press statement on Wednesday (23/1).
As part of Operation Damai Cartenz, Polri has also launched various humanistic-based programs, such as trauma healing activities, the distribution of school supplies for children, and community empowerment through education, health services, and economic aid. These programs have successfully reached many remote areas of Papua, including regions that have traditionally been hard to access.
“Through these programs, we want to show that the state is present in every corner of Papua. We are building good relations with the community, listening to their grievances, and striving to be a bridge for solutions to existing problems,” he added.
Moreover, Polri emphasized that many negative accusations against security forces in Papua often do not reflect the reality on the ground. Kombes Yusuf pointed out that security personnel work tirelessly to protect the people from the KKB’s threats, which often involve violence against civilians, including children and educators.
“Many narratives about us are unfair. In reality, we risk our lives to protect the people of Papua from armed group threats. We do not want the public to fall victim to misleading narratives,” he stressed.
Kombes Yusuf also called on all parties, both national and international, to support collaborative efforts in creating peace in Papua through constructive means.
“Papua is part of Indonesia, and we all share the responsibility to ensure that the people of Papua can live in peace, safety, and prosperity. Let us come together to build Papua with a spirit of unity and compassion,” he concluded.
Polri remains optimistic that through a humanistic approach, synergy with local communities, and support from all parties, Papua will continue to develop into a peaceful, secure, and prosperous region.
