JAYAPURA – Ahead of the New Year celebrations, tribal leaders in Papua have called on the community to maintain peace and public order (kamtibmas) to ensure a safe and harmonious environment.

Seppy Ibo, a tribal leader from Sentani, emphasized the shared responsibility between security forces and the community in creating a peaceful atmosphere during the festivities.

“While security forces play their role, the community also has an important part to ensure that peace prevails. Let us embrace the New Year with joy and togetherness,” Seppy stated during a press briefing in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, Papua, on Friday (December 20, 2024).

Yakob Fiobetauw, Head of the Judiciary of the Sentani Tribal Council, echoed the call for unity, urging residents to celebrate responsibly and avoid actions that might disrupt public order.

“The New Year is a time for togetherness. Let us use this opportunity to strengthen our bonds and ensure our environment remains safe and peaceful,” Yakob said.

Similarly, John Mauridz Suebu, Chairperson of the Sentani United Prosperity Alliance (ASBS), stressed the importance of proper conduct during the celebrations and warned against the consumption of alcohol, which could lead to disturbances.

“Prepare your hearts and minds to celebrate the New Year in a healthy and meaningful way. Avoid anything that could tarnish the spirit of the occasion,” John stated.

The appeal was supported by Ayub Epa, Chief of the Heram Ayapo Tribe, and Iknatius Pangkatana, Abhu Afa Senatni and an academic, who collectively urged all community members to work together to ensure a peaceful transition into the New Year.
