Manhunt Underway for Police Officer Suspected of Stealing Firearms from Yalimo District Police HeadquartersJayapura

Jayapura – The Papua Provincial Police are intensifying efforts to locate Bripda Aske Mabel (23), a member of the Yalimo District Police, who is suspected of stealing four AK-type firearms along with dozens of ammunitions. The incident occurred on June 9 at the Yalimo District Police headquarters in Elelim, Papua Highlands.
Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri confirmed that despite concerted efforts, Bripda Aske Mabel’s whereabouts remain undisclosed. “We have deployed a platoon of the Papua Mobile Brigade (Brimob) to assist in the search operation within the Yalimo District,” stated Fakhiri during a press conference in Jayapura.
Fakhiri also emphasized that authorities have yet to ascertain whether Bripda Aske has joined armed groups. Collaborative efforts with the suspect’s family are underway to facilitate the return of the stolen firearms.
The incident unfolded when Bripda Aske, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, entered the Yalimo District Police headquarters under the pretext of charging his cellphone. Without the knowledge of the duty officer, the suspect accessed the storage room and took four AK firearms. When confronted by the on-duty officer, Bripda Aske allegedly brandished his weapon, prompting the officer to flee for safety.
As the search continues, Papua Provincial Police are conducting thorough investigations to apprehend Bripda Aske Mabel and recover the stolen firearms.
