Jayapura– The security and public order situation in Papua has returned to a conducive condition following a public demonstration involving community members and students on Saturday (15/8/2026).
Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Senior Commissioner of Police Cahyo Sukarnito, said security personnel had carried out security measures during the public demonstration. Following the activity, the overall security situation remained under control and community activities continued normally.
“We have carried out security measures for the public expression of opinion by community and student elements. Praise be to God, the security situation is currently conducive and community activities are running well,” said Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Senior Commissioner of Police Cahyo Sukarnito, in Jayapura on Saturday.
According to Cahyo, the aspirations conveyed during the demonstration had also been received by members of the Papua Provincial House of Representatives (DPR Papua) and the Jayapura Regency/City Regional House of Representatives (DPRK).
“We urge the public to work together to maintain a conducive security situation and not to be easily influenced by issues or hate speech spread through social media,” he said.
He explained that 10 police officers were injured while securing a demonstration organized by the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) in Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency.
“There were 10 personnel who were hit by stones during clashes with the protesters. Of the 10 injured officers, six were treated at Bhayangkara Hospital,” he said.
Meanwhile, to secure the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia on August 17, 2026, a total of 7,000 personnel have been deployed across the jurisdiction of the Papua Regional Police, covering Papua, Highland Papua, and South Papua provinces.
