Nabire — The Provincial Government of Central Papua has designated coffee and cocoa as leading commodities in its strategy to reinforce the regional economy. The policy is part of broader efforts to promote sustainable economic growth based on local potential while improving community welfare.
The Governor of Central Papua stated that the highland areas across several regencies hold strong potential for producing high-quality coffee, while lowland and coastal regions are well-suited for cocoa cultivation. According to the provincial administration, these commodities can become competitive economic drivers if managed systematically and professionally.
To support this initiative, the government has rolled out several programs, including the distribution of superior seedlings, technical training in cultivation practices, and post-harvest assistance. Strengthening farmer groups and cooperatives is also a priority to ensure production sustainability and price stability at the farm level.
Beyond upstream development, the provincial government is emphasizing downstream processing to increase added value. Processing coffee and cocoa into finished products is expected to expand market access at regional and national levels, reducing dependence on raw commodity sales.
Through collaboration with private sector partners, financial institutions, and other stakeholders, the Central Papua administration remains optimistic that coffee and cocoa will serve as key pillars of inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the province.
