Jayapura – The Papua Provincial Government officially announced the Muara Tami District as one of the regional food granaries through five-hectare corn planting activities in Skow Mabo Village, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Saturday (14/2).
This launch is a concrete step of the Papua Provincial Government in strengthening food security as well as encouraging the independence of strategic commodity production in the eastern region of Indonesia. Muara Tami is considered to have a wide and fertile agricultural land potential, so it is very prospective for the development of food crops, especially corn and rice.
In that activity, representatives of the provincial government together with district officials and local farmer groups also carried out the first planting as a symbol of the start of the integrated food area development program in the border area.
The Papua Provincial Government assesses that the strengthening of the agricultural sector in Muara Tami is not only oriented towards increasing production, but also towards empowering local farmers and strengthening the economy of the village community. With the optimization of the existing land, it is hoped that Muara Tami can become a corn and rice production center that is able to supply the needs of Jayapura City and its surroundings.
In addition, this program is also directed to support regional inflation control through the stabilization of food supply. The provincial government will continue to provide assistance, starting from the provision of superior seeds, support for production facilities, to strengthening market access for farmers’ harvests.
In the future, Muara Tami is expected to not only become a symbol of the new food barn in Papua, but also a model for the development of agricultural areas based on local potential that are sustainable and competitive.
