Nabire, Indonesia — The Central Papua Provincial Government has expanded its free education program to include junior high school students, broadening access to education for thousands of children across the province.

Previously implemented for senior high school and vocational school students, the initiative now covers junior secondary education as part of the provincial government’s efforts to improve educational access and strengthen human resource development.

Acting Head of the Central Papua Education and Culture Office, Nurhaidah, said the program will benefit 26,511 junior high school students enrolled in 148 schools across the province’s eight regencies.

“This year, the government is providing free education to 26,511 junior high school students across 148 schools in Central Papua,” Nurhaidah said.

According to her, the expansion of the free education program reflects one of the key priorities of the Central Papua Provincial Government under the leadership of Governor Meki Nawipa and Deputy Governor Deinas Geley. The policy builds upon an existing initiative that has already provided free education for students at the senior secondary level.

The provincial government views education as a strategic investment in the region’s future and a crucial component of efforts to improve the quality of human resources. Through the program, authorities aim to reduce financial barriers that often prevent children from accessing formal education.

The free education initiative had previously been implemented for thousands of senior high school and vocational school students throughout Central Papua. By extending the program to junior high schools, the government hopes to increase school participation rates and ensure broader access to educational opportunities.

Officials believe the policy will help create a stronger foundation for future generations while supporting long-term social and economic development in the province.

With the expanded coverage, more students in Central Papua are expected to benefit from quality education without the burden of tuition costs, reinforcing the government’s commitment to equitable educational access across the region.
