Wamena — The Kementerian Perumahan dan Kawasan Permukiman (Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas) has confirmed that the construction of 2,200 housing units under the Presidential assistance program in Papua Pegunungan will commence in 2026. The announcement underscores the central government’s commitment to improving access to adequate housing in Indonesia’s newest autonomous province.
The housing initiative is part of a directive from President Prabowo Subianto aimed at accelerating the development of basic infrastructure, particularly livable homes for communities in Papua’s mountainous region. The project will include Type 45 and Type 90 housing units, designed to meet local needs and adapt to the area’s geographical conditions.
Governor of Highland Papua, John Tabo, stated that the project was initially expected to move forward earlier but experienced scheduling adjustments due to technical and administrative challenges. To ensure its continuation, the provincial government held coordination meetings with Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait during a session with Commission V of the Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia in Jakarta.
The meeting addressed acceleration strategies, implementation mechanisms, and technical stages to ensure that construction proceeds as planned in 2026. The provincial administration expressed full support for the Ministry’s efforts and affirmed its readiness to collaborate in field implementation.
The development of the 2,200 housing units is expected not only to provide decent housing for beneficiaries but also to stimulate the local economy through job creation and increased construction activity in Highland Papua.
With the confirmed timeline, residents who qualify for the assistance program are anticipated to experience tangible benefits from the central government’s housing initiative beginning next year.
