Merauke, South Papua — To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, residents of Sota District, located on the Indonesia–Papua New Guinea border in Merauke Regency, South Papua, held a special flag-raising ceremony on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The highlight of the event was the hoisting of a giant Indonesian flag on a hillside overlooking the international border.

The ceremony involved local residents, school students, and security personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and Police (Polri), who joined forces to unfurl the massive red-and-white flag. This symbolic act served as a tribute to national heroes and a proud expression of patriotism from one of Indonesia’s most remote regions.

Deputy Regent of Merauke, H. Ridwan, who attended the event, praised the strong spirit of nationalism demonstrated by the border community.

“We deeply appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the people in celebrating Independence Day. This is proof that love for Indonesia remains strong—even at the nation’s farthest edges,” Ridwan said after the ceremony.

The giant flag raising was more than just a ceremonial act; it was a powerful reminder of unity and national identity. The event was held with solemnity and enthusiasm, accompanied by the national anthem and traditional cultural performances that added to the significance of the occasion.
The government hopes that such initiatives will continue to foster patriotism and strengthen the spirit of unity across the archipelago, especially in strategic border regions like Sota, which play a crucial role in maintaining Indonesia’s sovereignty
