Timika, Central Papua— The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of Central Papua expects the new Bishop of the Diocese of Timika, Mgr. Bernardus Bofitwos Baru, OSA, is able to strengthen the spirit of unity and harmony among religious communities and between citizens from various backgrounds in the Central Papua region.

This was conveyed directly by the Governor of Central Papua, Meki Fritz Nawipa, in his speech when attending the Timika Bishop’s Ordination Mass which took place at the Three Kings Cathedral Church, Timika, Wednesday (5/14/2025). The ordination of Bishop Bernardus was carried out by the Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia (Nuncio Apostolic), Mgr. Piero Pioppo, and attended by thousands of people and invited guests from various regions.

The Governor of Meki said that the Diocese of Timika has a wide and challenging service area geographically, ranging from coastal areas to mountains. With the diversity of tribes, languages, cultures, and high levels of education in this region, the presence of a shepherd who can embrace all levels of society is very needed.

“We really appreciate the appointment of a native Papuan priest to be the Bishop of the Timika Diocese. This is a pride for all of us. We hope that Bishop Bernardus can be a symbol of unity and bring the spirit of harmony in the midst of a diverse society,” said the Governor of Meki.

He added that the role of religious figures is very important in supporting the government’s efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Central Papua. Especially in facing social and development challenges in eight districts in this new province.

“It is possible that Bishop Bernardus can reach all people and communities regardless of their background, and build a strong dialogue between religions and local governments,” he added.

With this ordination, the Diocese of Timika is now officially under the leadership of Mgr. Bernardus Bofitwos Baru, OSA, who became the third Bishop since the establishment of this diocese. Catholics in Central Papua also welcome the joy of the presence of the new spiritual leader, with great hopes for the realization of peace, equitable service, and the spirit of togetherness in all corners of the region.
