Jayawijaya, Indonesia – As the 2024 simultaneous regional elections approach, Melianus Yumai, the leader of the large Paniai tribe, has called on the people of Paniai to maintain peace and security during the electoral process.
In a statement from Jayapura, Pastor Ari Mabel, the Chairman of the Papua Highlands Church Fellowship (PGGP), expressed his hope that the people of Papua Highlands would remain calm and patient as the General Elections Commission (KPU) finalizes its decisions regarding the election results for the positions of District Head, Deputy District Head, Governor, and Deputy Governor.
“We must be wise in receiving information and trust that everything will proceed as expected,” Pastor Mabel said.
Pastor Mabel emphasized the importance of public participation in ensuring the success of the election, stating that it is not only the responsibility of the KPU, Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), local governments, and security forces but also the people themselves who play a crucial role in ensuring the peaceful and smooth execution of the electoral process.
“The success of the elections is a collective effort. The community is an essential part of the process, and together we must safeguard the integrity of the elections,” he explained.
Furthermore, Pastor Mabel urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid being provoked by individuals who may attempt to disrupt the electoral process. He reminded everyone that maintaining peace and order is critical to the democratic process.
“Let us set an example for other regions by proving that Papua Highlands is a peaceful place. Even though Papua Highlands is often regarded as a conflict-prone area, we can show the world that we can carry out this election safely and peacefully,” he stressed.
In closing, Pastor Mabel appealed to the people to support the candidate who is elected, as they will be entrusted with the responsibility of leadership.
“Whoever is chosen, they will be the leader who will bring change. Let us unite in our determination and vision to build a better Papua Highlands,” he concluded.
Pastor Mabel also extended his gratitude to the authorities and security personnel who have worked diligently to ensure that the election process has been peaceful and orderly so far.
